October/Octubre

Hello everyone! Hard to believe that October is already over. And what a fun month it was! First of all, we were blessed with absolutely glorious weather. It is especially nice after the extremely wet and then scorching hot summer we had. It was (still is) just SO beautiful outside. It is criminal not to enjoy it. And so we did.

Sofia's school had a great Oktoberfest. It was tons of fun. The girl rode the ponies, played in the moonwalk and even rode a mechanical bull! We had a fantastic time. Later that day we went to a pumpkin patch with some friends and had a good time as well. Pictures here.

Next Sofia and I went on her first school field trip! We went to Dewberry Farm. We came home full of dust and smelling like cows but had a grand time! Pictures here.

On another night we had pizza and carved a pumpkin. It was our first! Well, Sofia's and mine that is! I loved it. I hereby declare it a new tradition at Casa Leal.
Lastly it was Halloween night! After several failed attempts to obtain a bumble bee costume Sofia fell in love with a Minnie Mouse one. She was an extremely cute Minnie Mouse, if I do say so myself. Once more, we went trick or treating with her cousins and her friend Molly and had a blast. On our way home at the end of the night -with her pumpkin full of candy- Sofia said: "this was a splendid Halloween". Pictures here.

Hola! Increible pero cierto, otro mes se nos escapa de las manos. Octubre se fue volando pero fue un mes en el que nos divertimos mucho. Primero que nada, tuvimos un clima glorioso. Muy apreciado, especialmente después del verano tan extremadamente lluvioso y caluroso que tuvimos. De verdad que el clima estuvo (está todavía!) muy agradable. Es criminal no disfrutarlo. Y asi lo hicimos.

En la escuela de Sofia hubo un festival de otoño. Estuvo de lo mejor. La nena se montó en los caballos, en el colchón inflable y hasta en uno de esos toros mecánicos! Luego esa tarde fuimos a un lugar donde tenían bastantes calabazas y la pasamos chévere también. Haz click aqui para ver las fotos.

Luego Sofia tuvo su primer paseo con la escuela. Fuimos a una granja que se llama Dewberry Farm y queda como a una hora al norte de Houston. Regresamos a la casa llenas de tierra de pies a cabeza y oliendo a vacas pero la pasamos excelentemente bien! Haz click aqui para ver las fotos.

Otra noche comimos pizza y tallamos una calabaza. Nuestra primera vez. Bueno, para Sofia y para mi por lo menos, Rudy ya lo había hecho antes. Es un éxito, me encantó! Ha sido declarado una nueva tradición en la Casa Leal.
Y por último llegó la noche de Halloween! Despues de buscar, - sin suerte- un disfraz de abejita por todos lados, Sofia se enamoró de un disfraz de Minnie Mouse. Se le veía extremadamente lindo, modestia aparte. Una vez más, fuimos a buscar dulces de puerta en puerta con sus primos y con su amiguita Molly. Nos divertimos mucho. Ya de regreso a casa, al final de la noche -con su calabaza repleta de dulces- Sofia declaró que este había sido un "Halloween espléndido". Haz click aqui para ver las fotos.

Recap/Recuento

There is no two ways about it, this summer has flown by! As you might have noticed, we had to skip a bit and post Sofia's first day of school pictures right away (or else! say the Venezuelan grandparents!), but from the last post in July, lots of things happened. First of all, Sofia got her cast taken off. Her arm healed perfectly well so that is a great relief. Then she got a new pet fish. Goldie was her name, and I say "was" because the poor fish only lasted a few weeks (what are we doing wrong?). Fortunately Sofia got over it pretty quickly. Now I am thinking about getting her a hamster (am I crazy?), but I have to think about it some more.

In other news, the girl is adapting fairly well to school. Although she did ask -on her 3rd day of school, no less- when she was going to have vacation! Yikes!

Other than that, we spent the rest of the summer relaxing at home, taking pictures (Sofia and Rudy), going to the pool and attending a few birthday parties. See pictures below!

No hay discusión, el verano se ha ido volando. Como se habrán dado cuenta, me tuve que saltar todo el mes de agosto para poner las fotos de el primer día de clases de Sofia más rápido que inmediatamente (o me cuelgan los abuelos venezolanos), pero desde la ultima vez que escribí, muchas cosas han pasado. La más importante? A Sofia le quitaron el yeso, y gracias a Dios su brazo le quedo perfectamente bien. Luego a Sofi le regalaron otro pecesito que se llamaba Goldie. Y digo que se "llamaba", porque el el pobre pez ya paso mejor vida. Solo duró unas semanas (que estamos haciendo mal?). Afortunadamente Sofia lo tomó mucho mejor esta vez. Ahora estoy pensando en comprarle un hamster (estoy loca?). Lo tengo que pensar un poquito más. Ya veremos dijo un ciego.

Por lo demás todo chevere. La chiquita se esta adaptando muy bien a la escuela, aunque nos preguntó -el tercer día de escuela, nada más y nada menos - que cuando iba a tener vacaciones! Jajajajajaja!

De resto hemos pasado el resto de el verano tranquilos en la casa, tomando fotos (Rudy y Sofia), nadando y divirtiendonos en algunas fiestas de cumpleaños. Aqui estan las fotos:

Sofia's 1st day of school/primer dia de clases

Today was Sofia's 1st day of school. She was so excited! At first, she didn't want to wake up, but she jumped out of bed once she realized today was the big day! She got dressed quickly and didn't even want to eat breakfast. Once she got there, she found her seat, put her stuff down, and looked over at us and asked "Don't you have to go to work now?". She was so happy to be there, and she quickly made new friends. When we went to pick her up, she wanted to stay. She told us all the kids were nice, that she had a great time, and that she liked her teacher, Ms. Brodie. She said she had a great day, but later, on the way home, she got sad thinking of Momo, her babysitter since she was 3 months old. So, we went to Momo's house, and they jumped into each other's arms. After we left Momo's house, Sofia cried again, saying she wishes it could be the same as before, but we all know that will never be; we just didn't have the heart to tell her. Even so, we know it's time for her to have new experiences and that little by little she'll get used to these changes. The good thing is, Momo lives real close and we can visit her often.

Hoy fue el primer dia de clases de Sofia! Estaba tan emocionada! Al principio, no se quería despertar, pero pegó un brinco cuando se acordo que hoy era el primer dia de clases. Se vistió rapidito y ni quiso desayuñar. Cuando llegó al salon, encontró su lugar, se sentó, y luego nos preguntó si ya no era hora de irnos al trabajo. Estaba muy feliz y pronto hizo amiguitos. Cuando la recojimos, dijo que se quería quedar, que todos los niños eran amables, que se divirtió, y que le cayó bien su maestra, la Srta. Brodie. Total, que dijo que le fué buenisimo, pero en camino a la casa, se puso triste pensando en Momo, su nana desde los 3 meses. Entonces la llevamos a casa de Momo, y cuando se vieron se abrazaron como si no se habian visto en muchos años! Cuando nos fuimos, Sofia volvio a llorar, diciendo que deseaba que todo fuera como antes, pero sabemos que nunca volverá a ser asi; no más no tuvimos corazón para decirselo. Aun asi, sabemos que ya era hora de que tuviera nuevas experiencias y que poco a poco se irá acostumbrando a el cambio. Lo bueno es que Momo vive muy cerca de nosotros y la podremos visitar seguidamente.

(over)CAST days

As you might remember, Sofia fractured her arm at the left elbow last month, right before her birthday. The week after, she had a cast put on it. She chose pink, her favorite color.



Today, the cast came off, but her fracture hasn't completely healed, so they had to put on a new cast. This time, she chose red, her daddy's favorite color! Isn't she sweet!!!! Here are pictures with her cast full of signatures.















Two weeks after Sofia's birthday party, her cousin Rene had his birthday party. Even though it rained, the kids did manage to go outside to break the piñata. Sofia whacked the stuffing out of it, with just one arm!!! I think we'll put her in tennis real soon!

And speaking of rain, it hasn't stopped raining in the last 2 and 1/2 weeks! Did we move to Seattle without anybody telling us or what? At least Sofi hasn't missed much, but she is so ready to go to the park and to the swimming pool. She'll be in her cast at least another two weeks, but hopefully it will come off for good at that time.

Last week, Alejandra (Libertad's cousin) came to visit, and one of the fun places we went to was to NASA. After touring NASA, we went to Kemah, where we had lunch, played some games, saw some stingrays, and rode the carousel and a plane. We had a great time. Click here to see some pictures.

The Fourth of July came and went, and it was raining so much, pretty much all day, that we didn't even open the doors, much less go outside. We stayed home and watched t.v. and played all day. It was awesome!!! Lazy days like that are precious. Hope to have another one real soon. In the meantime, we'll keep on updating you as much as possible. Check back soon.

Como recordaran, Sofia se fracturó el codo el mes pasado; dos dias antes de su cumpleaños para ser exactos. Una semana después, le enyesaron el brazo. Cuando le preguntaron que color quería, ella escogió rosado. Hoy le quitaron el yeso, pero aparentemente la fractura no se ha sanado completamente, lo que quiere decir que le tuvieron que poner otro yeso. Esta vez escogió rojo, por que es el color preferido de su papi (asi lo dijo ella y Rudy se derritió por supuesto!).

Dos semanas después de el cumple de Sofi, fué la fiesta de cumpleaños de su primito Rene. Lamentablemente llovió, pero por lo menos los chamos pudieron salir un ratico a tumbar la piñata. Para mi sorpresa (y la de todos creo yo), Sofia le dió a la piñata con un solo brazo, sin deberla ni temerla! Que fútbol ni que nada, en tennis es que la vamos a meter, jajaja!

Y hablando de lluvia, ha estado lloviendo casi todos los días por 2 semanas y media. Que fastidio. Por lo menos Sofia no se ha perdido de mucho, pero ya está que no se aguanta las ganas de ir a el parque y a la piscina. El yeso rojo se lo tiene que dejar solo por dos semanas más, cuando Dios mediante, se lo quitarán definitivamente.

La semana pasada, Alejandrita (asi te voy a decir toda la vida cuado hablo de ti Ale, no me importa que tu seas mayor que yo, jajaja) vino a visitarnos y la pasamos de lo mejor. Fuimos a NASA y luego a Kemah; donde almorzamos, jugamos, vimos unas manta rayas y Sofi se montó en el carrusel y el los avioncitos. Gozamos un puyero.

Luego vino el 4 de Julio. Como llovió todo el dia ni abrimos la puerta de la casa. Nos quedamos todo el dia en pijamas, jugamos y vimos tele. Fue lo máximo! La verdad es que tenemos muy pocos dias de morsa como ese asi que hay que aprovecharlos! Bueno eso es todo por ahora, estamos en contacto!

Happy Birthday!!!!! / Feliz Cumpleaños!!!!!

Sofia turned 5 today! We celebrated her birthday on Saturday at one of those party places that have all sorts of cool moowalks. It was a lot of fun. We all had a fantastic time bouncing and sliding. Well, Sofia could not bounce that much. She broke her left elbow, that's why she has her arm in a sling. It happened Thursday at the babysitter's house. She was jumping on a bed and fell off and landed on her elbow. Luckily it was a toddler bed she fell off from, and she landed on carpet. It could have been much worse. Fortunately she is not in a lot of pain now and has been a trooper throughout the whole ordeal. Anyway, back to the party. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and Sofia received lots of great presents.

We also celebrated today at home. Sofia and Mami made a yummy chocolate and Nutella cake and the family came over to sing happy birthday. It was great.

Now, she's ready to start school but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it!

Sofia ya tiene 5 años! Celebramos su cumpleaños el sabado, en uno de esos lugares que tienen muchos colchones inflables. Nos divertimos mucho brincando y deslizandonos por el tobogán. Aunque Sofia no pudo brincar mucho que digamos. Se fracturó el codo izquierdo, por eso trae el brazo en un cabestrillo. Pasó el jueves pasado en casa de la señora que me la cuida. Estaba brincando en una camita de esas bajitas y se cayó aparatosamente. Se pegó en el codo y se lo fracuró. Afortunadamente fué en alfombra, pudo haber sido mucho peor. En tal caso, ya no le duele mucho y ella se ha adaptado muy bien a tenerlo en el cabestrillo. Aunque no pudo brincar tanto se divirtió bastante en su fiesta, le regalaron muchas cosas lindas y todos la pasamos de lo mejor.

Hoy domingo también celebramos aqui en la casa. Sofia y yo hicimos una deliciosa (modestia aparte- como decía mi abuelita Ana-) torta de chocolate con Nutella y la familia vino a cantarle cumpleaños. Estuvo de lo más simpático.

Y ya que tiene 5 años, dice que esta lista para ir a la escuela!! Pronto, pronto!

Bailando Joropo/ Dancing Joropo

Anoche Sofia y yo nos pusimos a bailar. Bailamos joropo, tambores y calipso. Hoy me duele todo, no me acordaba cuanto cansa bailar tambor! jajaja. La pasamos de lo mejor. Aqui les va un videito. Que lo disfruten.

Spring Update/Hola!

Here's what's happened in the last few weeks: A lot!

While we were away in Paris, Sofia had a little vacation of her own. She stayed with tias Norma and Alma, and Melissa, of course. They took her to San Antonio and went to SeaWorld. She saw the dolphins and the whales, and a bunch of other cool stuff (sorry, no pictures). She had a fantastic time, and as we mentioned, she did not even ask for us.
After we all got back home, Sofia went to the Children's Festival with her friend Molly. They did all kinds of neat stuff. Then Easter rolled around, and the obligatory family gathering, this time at Rene's. The highlight of the day was the egg hunt (though Libby might argue and say it was her father-in-law's barbacued ribs!). Sofia also spent a day at the Children's Museum learning and playing. A couple of days after that, though, something very sad happened; Mr. Finney died. Sofia took it very hard that first night, but by the next day, she was fine. Mr. Finney did have a very formal and dignified burial at sea, if you know what I mean.

Hola mi gente! me imagino que se deben estar preguntando que ha pasado que andamos perdidos. Pues la respuesta es: muchas cosas!

Mientras nosotros andabamos de novios en Paris, Sofia tuvo sus propias vacaciones. Como les comenté, se quedó con tia Norma y tia Alma, y su adorada Melissa por supuesto. Ellas la llevaron a San Antonio (como a 2 horas de aqui) y fueron a Sea World (un parque acuático). Allá vió delfines, ballenas y un montón de otras cosas maravillosas (no tenemos fotos de esta aventura, lamentablemente). La pasó de lo mejor, y como les dije, ni preguntó por nosotros.

Poco después de que todos regresamos a casa, Sofia fué a el Festival de el Niño con su amiguita Molly. Jugaron mucho y se divirtieron hasta más no poder. Luego llegó el Domingo de Resurrección, que por estos lares le dicen Pascuas, y la reunión familiar obligatoria. Este año en casa de mi cuñado Rene. La mejor parte de el día fue la búqueda de los huevitos (aunque las costillas de res que hizo mi suegro le llegaron cerca! [ y mi mamá se acaba de preguntar que le paso a su hija, la que nunca comía carne roja?!! jajaja]) pasamos de lo mas chévere. Después Sofia pasó un día en el Museo de los Niños jugando y aprendiendo muchas cosas. Unos días después de esto, algo bien triste pasó: Mr. Finney (su pescadito) pasó a mejor vida. Por supuesto Sofi se puso muy triste esa primera noche pero para el día siguiente ya se sentía mejor. Mr. Finney tuvo un entierro muy digno y formal en el baño (jajaja).

10 Years/10 Años

It's really hard to believe but March 15th of this year marked 10 happy years of marriage for Rudy and I. To celebrate, Rudy took me on the honeymoon we never had. We went to Paris, as we always dreamed, and had the time of our lives. Words simply can't describe how beautiful, how magnificent and how magical it was to be in such an amazing place with the love of my life. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Parece mentira, pero el 15 de marzo de este año marcó 10 años de feliz matrimonio para Rudy y para mi. Para celebrar, Rudy me regaló la luna de miel que nunca tuvimos. Fuimos a Paris, como siempre soñamos, y fue absolutamente maravilloso. No hay palabras que puedan describir lo bello, lo especial y lo mágico que fué estar en un lugar tan hermoso con el amor de mi vida. Mejor dejaré que las fotos cuenten la historia.

Not much

Sorry about the last 2 months, but nothing really exciting has happened. Sofia has a new fish, she named him "Mr. Finney", for obvious reasons (to her). This is spring break, and even though Sofia doesn't yet go to school, she is spending her spring break with her aunts Norma and Alma, and Melissa, while mommy and daddy go on their own spring break. Sofia has been looking forward to her "vacation" since before Valentine's Day, so she's ready! We'll let you know how our vacations turned out next week. We PROMISE!!!

Disculpen por el abandono, pero nada realmente emocionante a pasado. Sofia tiene un pescado nuevo, que nombro "Mr. Finney", por razones obias (para ella). Esta es la semana de "spring break", y aunque Sofia todavia no va a la escuela, ella va a pasar esta semana con sus tias Norma y Alma, y con Melissa, mientras mama y papa van en su propio "spring break". Sofia ha estado esperando sus "vacaciones" desde antes del dia de San Valentine, asi que esta lista. Ya les daremos saber como nos fue a todos de vacaciones la proxima semana. Se los PROMETEMOS!!!
